Lunch With Tom
Yesterday an old friend of ours, Tom, invited me out to lunch at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, The Border Grill. It is modern Mexican food served in an atmosphere of Pee Wee's Playhouse. Tom's lover, Peter, had committed suicide ten years ago and Tom found him. He has yet to re-partner and understandably, is still traumatized by the loss. He is the one friend I have who understands the dynamic of sudden loss and discovery. He also has the horrifying addition of suicide.

But we didn't speak of any of those emotional land mines. Instead, we talked about everything else. He is great conversation. We dissected the impending and ill-conceived war as well as this season's "Oz," which woefully seems to have ceased their policy of at least one penis shot per episode. We spoke of the state of gay culture, a subject of endless fascination for both of us. The time flew and it was a really great lunch.

I stayed up late last night watching TV and woke up equally late this morning. After the Bob trot, I've settled in to solve the myriad of problems facing this stupid stupid production, and getting ready for my NYC trip on Friday. Unfortunately, this meaningless holiday has cramped a lot of what I can accomplish. I mean I'm happy for those who need the day off but, really, the meaning of this holiday escapes me. We used to celebrate Lincoln's birthday and Washington's birthday, and that was specific and logical. This, however, is some generic day off to take advantage of shopping and sales.

I should probably lighten up on that, huh? I saw a George Will editorial about it and it got me to thinkin'. Aw, never mind. Have a great day!

I've chosen to boycott all the traditional Presidents Day activities this year -- the carol singing, card sending, feasting, humble bowing down in public parks at noon, shopping and gift giving -- to protest the actions of the person currently holding the job and to protest the crooked means by which he achieved his goal.

But no one seems to have noticed my boycott...

Very funny! Especially the humble bowing.

It is truly ironic to be forced to celebrate a President who is accidental at best and Mr. Scary at worst.

I am taking note of your boycott and perhaps will even join in.

Border Grill

I haven't been back to Border Grill in a few years! Do Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken still make "appearances" in the restaurant that you are aware? Is the restaurant's food still really good? Wow... I should go back there for lunch or dinner one of these days. Thanks for reminding me about it!

Oh--and as for the boycott of Mr. Scary, count me in.

Re: Border Grill

They're the same girls who opened City way back when, right? I might be wrong about that. I didn't see them yesterday although their names were prominent on the menu.

Hehe yeah Happy President Scary Day.

Re: Border Grill

Yes, I think you're right about them owning City Grill. While Border Grill is in Santa Monica, I think City Grill is downtown.

I remember when their show ("Two Hot Tamales") first started getting lots of play on the TV Food Network, my ex and I were CONVINCED that the two of them were a lesbian couple. Eventually, we learned that Mary Sue Milliken is married with children. However, Susan Feniger, I believe is a card-carrying family member. Rah-rah-rah! ;-)

Chris Meloni peeing in the bucket, and his cheek spread in a subsequent episode, is in the Hall Of Great TV Moments right along side Tonya Harding breaking her skate lace and the Richard Speck prison tape.

I never watched OZ, but my one regret is never having seen CHIP from "Kate And Allie" naked on a shower floor...

Re:

I have barely seen any of Oz because we don't have cable, but I managed to see that very hot bucket-piss.

Jeff and I went to the Border Grill when we were last in California; we had a great time and a wonderful meal!

Wow, my heart goes out to Tom. It's such a blessing that you've both found one another tho. Perhaps you can help heal each other's heart.

I could never get into Oz. I saw one episode in which a cellmate smeared his feces on his cell wall & that was it for me! I can't wait until the season premiere for Six Feet Under next Sunday. Do you watch that show? It's one of my favorite HBO series.

You'll be in NYC? Wow! Why & where? Perhaps we could meet up & have lunch!

I know. Oz is pretty brutal but this season has softened and no one is eating feces. I watched the first season of Six Feet Under then, well, everything happened and I lost my appetite for the show.

I'm getting into NYC on Friday evening, staying at the Crowne Plaza (ugh) and doing the show on Sunday live with the Grammys. I leave Monday morning.

I have Saturday lunch free (I think). I didn't know you lived in the city : ) Would love to meet up for lunch if I can if that's good for you.

I can hardly blame you for not wanting to re-visit a show that deals with those kinds of themes. I'm sorry, it was thoughtless of me to suggest it.

The Crowne Plaza? Wow! You are stylin'! =o) Will you be staying at the Plaza in Times Square or right by the UN? How exciting! Will you be given access to the Grammys?

Saturday afternoon would be fine! I'll email you my cellphone number so you can contact me if/when you have free time. =oD

Times Square ("fresh air!" - sorry, bad "Green Acres" reference). We are going to be ensconced in a radio studio on 6th but will have a reporter on the red carpet and a seat filler with a cell phone. We'll also have live monitors in our studio to give a blow-by-blow. I wish i could be at MSG - Bruce is playing! And he'll probably, hopefully, sweep this year.

And it was sooooo not thoughtless to reference "Six Feet Under." Please. A perfectly good question with a loaded answer that followed. It's a great show but I just can't do it anymore.
