"Confessions of a Dangerous Mind"

I went into this today with two strikes against it. First there's Charlie Kaufman. Besides his inability to keep his stories on track and his penchant for writing fucked up endings to his films, there's a smugness that irritates me. Also, in the early 90s, I was making some extra money doing coverage for two studios and one very large agency. I had done this in the early stages of my career and I was pretty good at it. I was given this script to cover and I literally thought it was the worst script I had ever read. I'm not sure if Charlie was the writer at that point. After seeing the film, I don't think so because the film was great!

Sam Rockwell is phenomenal as Chuck Barris, Clooney does an amazing job keeping both aspects of the film in check, Drew Barrymore her best cutey-pie since "The Wedding Singer," and Julia Roberts was a lot of fun to watch (other than "Hook," I am a sucker for Julia).

This movie moved into the #4 slot of my year's top 9. I have yet to see the tenth film to join the list. If pressed, I'm going to put "Blue Crush" as #10 but I haven't seen "Bowling for Columbine" or "Chicago" yet.
