At least they're funnier than Robin Williams
A couple of years ago, my friend Scott asked me to go with him to the Improv. He’d developed some new material for his upcoming one-man show and wanted to test it out on an audience, a routine practice for comics. He was doing pure stand-up--no characters or wigs or flamboyant voices, just jokes.

After his set, Michael Richards took the stage to do his ten minutes, and he began by saying, “How do I follow a fucking faggot like that?”

No one in the audience laughed. From the back of the room, Scott became enraged and wanted to go on stage to confront him. He didn’t. We left.

More hilarity ensued yesterday when I saw Paul Rodriguez denounce Richards’s actions. A few years earlier when Rodriguez and Scott were together on a celebrity episode of The Weakest Link, Rodriguez said he wouldn’t stand next to Scott because he didn’t want “the gay to rub off on him.”

Yes, Paul, you certainly are a better man than Michael, and just as funny.

George Lopez was quoted as saying Michael Richards is a funny ACTOR who never once belonged on a stand-up stage to begin with. The more I hear about his act, the more I'm inclined to agree.

I reckon the rest of his career will be spent starring in movies directed by Mel Gibson, funded by the KKK.

Sigh. Sometimes Steve Martin is right: Comedy is not pretty.

Yeah, but not everything ugly is comedy, either.

Saying someone is funnier than Robin Williams isn't really going out on a limb.

I'm reminded of interviews where you see old versions of former stars telling their stories as if they're still just as relevant as they were back then. Especially now, since I remember many of them in their heyday. Their stories reveal some of the batshit crazy that everyone used to keep hidden for them. I think when you scratch the surface of Hollywood all kinds of soul-eating worms are exposed.

Clearly Richards has been getting away with this for a long time. Why did it take YouTube to bring it to light? Why wasn't there an outcry sooner?

Oh cool. I actually got to meet him a couple of times. Once near the Vietnam memorial during the '93 March On Washington; he was very nice and took his pic with me, though he gently chastized me for calling him "sir." Then several years later I laid that picture in front of him when he was book signing as Buddy Cole. He looked at th epic, at me, at the pic, at me, all with a look like "Um, did we fuck? Who are you?" Then as Buddy he just sid "Oh, I know him. He's a mess."

Where was the book signing? I was probably skulking around in the background with my arms folded.

Every time I see a reference to Paul Rodriguez, I have to trace my mind to figure-out when he actually did anything as a performer. I guess, he must hang-out around the comedy clubs and I believe I've seen his name as a producer, but last I heard, he had a ranch of some sort and I always had the impression that it was taking the majority of his time.

As for Michael Richards, I enjoyed his work on "Fridays", but he was way down the list, almost like a fourth banana. I also watch half an episode of "Seinfeld" every day, but it's more of the Kramer stories and less of the Kramer actor which I enjoy.

Oh, and just think; There was that thing a few years ago, when the others were holding-out for more money from the DVD sales. It seems that Michael Richards was the first to cave, by something like two weeks, but you have to wonder now, if Jerry and Larry wished they had given him more money.

You're right! I forgot about Richards caving on the negotiation. Wimp.

Having nothing to do with this post, can I just say you have one of the coolest journals on here? I know I never comment, but I do read it, and love it.

Confession

The sad thing about me is that the moment I read this...

My first urge was to make a "How many gay men does it take to beat up Michael Richards?" joke. But I couldn't decide on the right punch line. And then I pictured Paul Rodriguez frantically running thru Hollywood traffic as Scott Thompson chased after him try to rub some gay off. And then I decided I needed sleep. My brain is an inappropriate creature.

Silly Paul Rodriguez, gay doesn't rub off on you, it sprays.
